INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
1st day || Tuesday 11/07/2017
On our 1st day of our MediaLit class, we had an introduction to what MediaLit Portal is all about. We had a fun time in one of the activities taken which are about what form of media we used and spent hours on in the past week. I answered the questions as followed:
Media Information Number of hours a week
Facebook 14
Youtube 18
Twitter 3.5
Instagram 1.75
Wuxiaworld 42
Messenger 6
I spent the most time in Wuxiaworld due to the fact that I am addicted to reading novels even when I have free time at school. This was followed by Youtube and Facebook which is my way of spending time and seeing what's popular in the world today. Media is a huge part of our lives since we live in an 'Information Age' where we receive instant information and gain knowledge from these pieces of info and have different uses for them. Media, for me, provides me with entertainment, knowledge, communication, and awareness.
Media, in this day and age, heavily affects communication and how many people receive information. This provides us with a way to influence, and be influenced by other people, which is a part of essential skills in Media Literacy. These are all of my understandings in relation to what Media Literacy is all about and how important media is in our lives.
At the end of our discussion, we were also introduced to some new terms such as Technology Literacy, Information Literacy, and Media Information Literacy and were asked to define these terms, to identify the misconceptions that I may have with these terms. Here are some misconceptions I had on the subject:
- Media Literacy is not only about expressing yourself but also in how we access and analyze media in various forms with our set of skills that not only pertain to social media but in traditional media as well.
- Information Literacy is not only about knowing information but actually recognizing when it is needed, located and effectively communicated in many formats.
- In media we do not actually have absolute freedom, which is a common misconception, we still have our responsibilities when expressing ourselves since it may lead to harm for other people as well as ourselves.
- Media Information literacy is actually the set of essential skills needed to use media and become a critical thinker as well as a social person. Not actually is it defined as literally fluent in media and information.
